Sources of lead exposure

Lead poisoning and industrial lead

Industrial sites

Although lead occurs naturally in the environment, most of the lead currently in the environment comes from human activities.

Industrial sites such as lead smelters and refineries, battery manufacturers, plants involved in iron and steel production or plants involved in the manufacture of tetraethyl and tetramethyl lead may contaminate the surrounding area with dangerous levels of lead in the air, ground and water. A battery plant located directly across the street from a residential mobile home park may contaminate the soil with levels of lead high enough for the area to be classified as an EPA Superfund site. The plant may lead-poison the children who live there and force residents to move.
