Sources of lead exposure

Lead poisoning and lead dust

Lead dust

Although lead occurs naturally in the environment, most of the lead currently in the environment comes from human activities.

Lead dust is created by the improper removal of lead paint from surfaces during renovation. It also occurs around friction areas such as doors and windows in older homes. Lead dust is very fine and is not visible to the naked eye. It is quite difficult to remove completely and requires special equipment, special training of those doing the work, and clearance testing after the removal is finished to ensure that lead dust levels are within safe limits as defined by the EPA and HUD.
