Sources of lead exposure

Lead poisoning and lead in soil

Lead in soil

Although lead occurs naturally in the environment, most of the lead currently in the environment comes from human activities.

Lead builds up in the soil over time from the residue of leaded gasoline combustion, from lead paint chipping off homes and from industry pollution. Lead levels in soil are generally highest in urban areas, in areas of heavy automobile use, in industrial sites and around older homes and buildings where soil may be contaminated as older lead paint chips off. Since lead does not break down, it stays in the affected soil, which eventually becomes hazardous waste.
