Sources of lead exposure

Lead poisoning and lead in water

Lead in water

Although lead occurs naturally in the environment, most of the lead currently in the environment comes from human activities.

In most areas of the country, drinking water is not a serious source of lead poisoning. In June, 1988, the EPA banned the use of lead solder and other lead containing materials in household plumbing. Many older homes, however, may have lead pipes or pipes that were soldered with lead. Running the water 60-90 seconds before initial use will flush any lead-contaminated water left sitting in the pipes overnight. When cooking or preparing baby formula, cold tap water should be used because boiling water actually brings out the lead particles.
