Lead poisoning and pregnant women

Lead crosses the placenta. This means that pregnant women who are exposed to lead may pass it on to their unborn fetuses. Fetal absorption may be the cause of up to 50% of the lead ingested by the child. The prenatal period is crucial to the development of the fetus, and exposure to any toxins during this time may affect the continuing development of the child after birth. It is therefore, extremely important for pregnant women to stay away from any lead exposure during their pregnancy.
